Description

Arthur Heun (18661946) was a member of the Prairie School, a group of American architects who worked in the Midwest about 18901920. Inspired by the work of Louis Sullivan, and led by Frank Lloyd Wright, these architects defined a new style characterized by low, horizontal forms fitting harmoniously into the flat terrain of their region. Constructed in natural materials such as brick, oak, and glass, large open rooms flowed into one another, often organized around a central masonry fireplace. In addition to the main structure, Prairie-style architects also designed furniture, lighting, and accessories for their commissions. The Museum has in its collection two stained-glass panels and wall sconces designed by Arthur Heun for the Sedgwick Brinsmaid House in Des Moines, Iowa (190102). Our Heun Bookmark is adapted from these original designs.
