Description

This pyramid set includes the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon from Teotihuacan and the Maya Pyramid of Chichen Itza. The Mexican complex Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon was created in Teotihuacan. Teotihuacan was the first major city in the Western Hemisphere and the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas. dating back to around 100 BCE. Approximately in 700 AD all its inhabitants have left the city for unknown reasons. The Aztecs who have come here much later have found only ruins. Chichen Itza is an ancient city built by the Mayan civilization. Dominating the center of Chichen Itza is the pyramid commonly known as “El Castillo” (the castle). This step pyramid was dedicated to Kukulkan (the Mayan name for Quetzalcoatl, the Mesoamerican deity whose name means “feather-serpent”). It is a square based pyramid that has stairs going up each of the four sides to Kukulkan’s Temple on the top. It was designed so that, at the equinoxes, the rising and setting sun casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent that slithers down the northern side of the pyramid to the serpent’s head at the base.
